Doctoral School, Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences invite applications for one PhD position in Global History of the Portuguese Empire under the National Science Center of Poland grant “Imperial Commoners in Brazil and West Africa (1640–1822): A Global History from a Correspondence Network Perspective” (Project No. 2022/45/B/HS3/00473, project leader Dr. Agata Błoch) for the period of 4 years.

Scope of Work:
Active involvement in the Historical Research Line of the project “Imperial Commoners of Brazil and West Africa”,
Thorough review of the scholarly literature encompassing colonial history, global history, subaltern studies, and the Global South,
Proficient reading and analysis of early modern historical source materials written in Portuguese,
Skillful identification and critical examination of key concepts crucial to the historical context,
Establishing insightful comparisons and forging connections between the colonial experiences in colonial Brazil and West Africa,
Proficiency in archival research techniques,
Active participation in research team meetings and seminars,
Successful completion of a doctoral thesis within a four-year timeframe,
Effective dissemination of research findings through conferences, publications, and engaging in popular scientific events.
Requirements:
A master’s degree in history or related discipline,
Demonstrated experience in paleography with an emphasis on working with manuscripts in Portuguese,
Strong analytical aptitude,
A strong interest in global history, particularly with an emphasis on the early modern Portuguese Empire, colonial Brazil, and/or West Africa,
Proficiency in Portuguese at a minimum level of C1 and a good command of English at a minimum level of B1,
Exceptional motivation for scholarly research and commitment to dissertation preparation,
Willingness to collaborate effectively in a research team.
