I'm pleased to share that the Maritime Workshop - From Archives to Actions, was successfully held on the 25th and 26th of June 2024 at the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland.
Over these two days, participants embarked on a maritime odyssey through oceanic history, exploring the historical practices that have shaped maritime studies. The first day was dedicated to historical insights, including the seafaring saga of Gdańsk in the late Middle Ages, connections between the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean in the early modern period, and the impact of maritime predation in the South Atlantic. Attendees also delved into the evolution of modern science through voyages in the Indian Ocean and the dynamics of the Portuguese merchant navy across continents.
On the second day, we focused on the practical aspects of maritime studies and digital tools. Sessions included navigating databases on naval raids, examining the role of Maritime Archaeology, exploring the VOC's involvement of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth inhabitants, and uncovering the extensive resources of the SlaveVoyages database.
This workshop provided a unique opportunity to transition from archival research to action, offering valuable insights into the vast field of maritime studies. I'm proud to have been part of such a comprehensive and enlightening event.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the participants, whose contributions made this workshop a resounding success.
Special thanks go to my organizing team members:
